Poll: $100 donation to a Cincinnati cause

In the past few years, I've managed a couple of other blogs that ran basic text ads on them. When I specifically ran them on my Year of Philanthropy blog, I promised I'd put any money I made off the ads toward something charitable.

Google doesn't cut you a check until you reach $100, though... and after essentially forgetting about the account, a check showed up in the mail today.

So! Tell me where to put the money!

There is a poll in the middle column of this blog, right under the RSS link and search bar. I've listed 6 off-the-top-of-my-head suggestions:
Alternately, you are welcome to write in an additional option, which will count for a vote. Simply leave a comment on this post (the button is at the TOP of the post, which is stupid) to do so.

This poll will run until next Friday (October 9th) until noon. Thank you for your input and I'll share the results in a little over a week!

P.S. [edit] If the poll gets 100+ votes, I'll double the donation.

The Family Nurturing Center is a really good cause. They work to end the cycle of child and domestic abuse.

I'm voting for WVXU because they always have interesting, thought-provoking stories that are different from the typical news story you read/see. Also, I love "A Prairie Home Companion," and I want to show my love for Garrison Keillor.

Thank you both for your comments! I wasn't aware of the Family Nurturing Center before.

Krystan: I frakkin' love WVXU. Did you put your vote on the poll already?

You know I did!

Hey Erica! I voted for the Free Store Food Bank. If it were my poll, I'd add a local animal shelter or rescue group. But, it ain't my poll!! :) You're a sweetheart!

The Family Nurturing Center is a very worthwhile cause and they do amazing work but they have been hit very hard by the recession. People just aren't as willing or able to donate when times are hard. Check out their website to learn more. I hope that even if you they don't win your poll, that you'll find them worthy of future donations.

Jenn: I bounced a check yesterday and am still donating. Recession be damned! ;)

My vote is for A Caring Place. They certainly helped me when I found out I was pregnant. They gave me a crib, free of charge, just for taking part in a parenting class that they offered.

All of the places you listed (and what others have commented about) sound like great causes to support! Just to make things more difficult (haha) I'm going to throw a new one in the mix - how about the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County? They are really hurting right now because of the state budget cuts from this summer, and may have to close branches (like, HALF of them) if their levy doesn't pass this November. Right now they can use all of the help they can get!

Here's information on how to give to the library:

Yes, I realize how predictable it is for your librarian friend to suggest a library, but I know how bad of a situation the libraries are in down there. I think it's really awesome that you're following through with this, and I'm sure whatever organization gets your donation will be very appreciative!

There were so many great causes mentioned that we might have to run another poll in the future. I think libraries are a great idea-- though no, I was not surprised to hear that from you. :)

Thank you for taking the time to drop me a note!
