AFC: Frank Lloyd Wright symposium

What an awe-inspiring photograph of the event, eh? Really just captures the mood. Urgh.

Anyway. I've mentioned before that I've been getting into architecture lately, beginning specifically with when Dan and I visited Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater in Pennsylvania. About a month ago I discovered an interesting opportunity: a free symposium about FLW at the Cincinnati Public Library, so we planned our Saturday around it.

(I need to write an entire post about the library itself, I should note. I hadn't been there in far too long-- maybe high school?)

The symposium was... eek, I use "fantastic" too much on this blog. I really, truly enjoyed myself. They had a variety of speakers and all from different vantage points: one woman currently owns a FLW house in Clifton, others were members of the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati (AFC), museum/house curators, etc.

Each had presentations with great photographs and avoided technical jargon that would have lost me (actually something I was a little worried about, considering the source was the AFC). This photograph at right is from when one of the library staff had to shut the blinds so we could see the presentations, but otherwise things went smoothly.

I learned a lot, engaged in non-standard Saturday afternoon fare, spent time in the library I've worked blocks away from for 4+ years, and really just all-around enjoyed myself.

Dan and I both walked away from the symposium more excited than every to visit nearby-ish FLW landmarks, like the house in West Lafayette, IN or the one in Springfield, OH. I will also be keeping a closer eye on the AFC so that we can be sure to attend other events, including exhibitions and tours that they regularly give.

I wish I'd known - I'm a huge FLW fan. The one in Springfield is okay - not near as good as some in Iowa that I've seen but it still has some interesting features. And it's only about 90 minutes away! Head to Yellow Springs after that and you have a fantastic day trip planned! And make sure to eat at Ha Ha Pizza in YS - great stuff.

Sorry! Maybe we need to find a way to start posting what we WILL be doing ahead of time, in case anyone's interested. The few times we did that, we didn't get any response... maybe we need a sidebar thing or something. I hate that you missed out!

Check out the site though-- they have a new exhibit up until early November (so move quickly!).

Yeah, there are a few FLW places here in town. I think there's a house, a genealogy center, and also a little bank building that I'm sure you've passed on your way into campus. (At least, I thiiink it's FLW?)

If you're really into him, you might like reading The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett. It's a young adult book, but has interesting tie-ins to his work.

I wouldn't say I'm "really into him," but he is definitely a great stepping stone into architecture. I bet he's inspired millions of people to start studying it. His stuff is accessible and thought-provoking.

The local modernist group has shows and tours periodically.

But if you have a true architecture bug. We are fortunate to live near Columbus, Indiana. Home to more architecture designed by world famous architects than any town it's size. Most people have to travel thousands of miles to see architecture by I.M. Pei, Cesar Pelli, Richard Meier, Robert Venturi or Eero Saarinen. We only have to drive a few.

It is the perfect day trip.

You know, Dan's been telling me about that city-- he's been there before, but I haven't.

I wonder if people would be interested in us covering that on this blog?

It does sound like a kickin' day trip.
