Cincinnati Travel, Sports and Boat Show

As we noted over here, we were gifted with a handful of free tickets to the Cincinnati Travel, Sports and Boat Show. We have given a handful of the tickets away (Matt S., let us know how we can get two tickets to you!) and we used a few for ourselves, because we had never been to a boat show before.

Mostly, as we guessed, the boat show was not for us. The layout and feel was similar to the Auto Expo we attended last year, also held at Duke, but there wasn't much to hold my attention. The boat show's target audience seemed to be having a fantastic time, and even around 7pm the place was hopping.

I did get to sit on a scooter, though! Metro Scooter was in attendance, which almost became financially dangerous for me. Some day! ;)

I'm so glad we had an opportunity to tackle something new, and within walking distance from home!

Books by the Banks 2010

Hey! I covered Books by the Banks in 2009! Somehow I missed our blog's first anniversary, back in September. We'll have to commemorate it-- belatedly-- somehow!

This was Books by the Banks' 4th year, and I have loved watching it grow from the very first year. I noticed many improvements this time around, such as food! There has never been any kind of food offering at the convention center before, besides a piddly Starbucks booth downstairs, but this year they had a couple small options, such as a Skyline counter. That has to be a good sign, right?

There were also a few minor changes that I think made a huge difference, such as an announcement system that let them relay information about panels, instead of expecting people to rely on the paper programs.

There was also a lot less trouble with sound-- in years past, the paper-thin walls at Duke Energy Center led to problems being able to hear the panels. The rooms seemed to be split up differently this year, perhaps with that in mind.

The best-- and hands-down most awkward-- element of Books by the Banks is the author room. This sprawling ballroom stuffed with low tables can be a madhouse at times, and approaching an unknown author can be uncomfortable at first-- but I ended up spending about an hour discussing authors' books, opinions of the event... hell, stories about their children. If you're willing to walk up to a stranger and just start a conversation, you'll discover some incredible people in the Books by the Banks author room.

I walked away with way too many books, including a few supa-early Christmas presents. (That's how I roll.) I also had this year's poster signed by a very friendly John Maggard.

The turnout seemed great, despite competing with Celtic Fest and a Reds playoff game. The panels were hoppin' and the author room was humming with people. Can't wait until 2011!

Cincinnati Auto Expo

I've never been to a car show. None of my friends or family were gearheads, at least before Dan. When the Expo rolled around, it was kind of a given that Dan and his parents would go... and I guess I'm arm candy?

Yeah so look, there's an engine. I know *nothing* about cars-- I think I know a good amount about a good amount, but cars elude me completely. From what my friend Jordan said, this year's show was really stripped back-- naturally, it has been for a couple of years since the auto industry's heyday came to a grinding halt.

I had a good time, though. The highlight was probably getting to sit inside a new Prius, which had a solar panel on top and a very sci-fi interior. (I know I'm supposed to be drooling over a Maserati or something, but this did it for me.)

I really, really wish the Auto Expo would consult with me about how to make their show more accessible to non-gearheads (and, er, women) like me. I think there are some simple things they could do that would bring an entirely new audience to the show, without having to be tugged in by significant others. I guess that's just the marketer in me talking. Eww.
