The Southgate House - Stars

Last week before the holiday Erica and I went over to check out Stars at The Southgate House in Newport. I've wanted to catch these guys live since they first started putting out albums back around 2001. It was an awesome show and the Southgate House is such a great venue for shows. Here are a few really terrible pics I took on my iPhone of the show. Lesson from this trip: grab the DSLR next time.

Falcon Theater; Evil Dead: The Musical!

It was over-acted. It was campy. It was raunchy. It was gory.

...Yea!!

Dan and I were invited to a "blogger preview" of Falcon Theater's production of Evil Dead: The Musical! We jumped on the chance because a) duh, Evil Dead and b) we'd never been to Falcon Theater.

Falcon Theater is on Monmouth, near the Reser bike shop. We took a pedicab to get there-- more on that soon!

Evil Dead: The Musical is an over-the-top, disgusting piece of awesome, and the Falcon Theater cast pulled it off.

Did they hit every note? No, not really. Was every scripted line articulated with grace? Hell no. But did the cast members put everything they had into exaggerated facial expressions, grotesque sexual just-barely-innuendo, and vulgar demonic possessions? Shah, absolutely.

Oh, and did the audience walk away blood-splattered and satisfied? You bet yer sweet bippy.

Highlights of the show for me: the songs "What the F@#$ Was That?" and "All the Men in My Life [Keep Getting Killed by Candarian Demons]." The supporting character Scott was the standout to me, though Ash maintained a killer energy and every cast member had their moment to shine during the show.

I do want to mention that this show is not kid friendly-- it's loaded with blush-inducing foul language and seriously-this-isn't-even-innuendo-you-guys. The humor is base and raunchy. If you-- somehow-- did not like Evil Dead... what else can I say but avoid this show?

But if you are a fan, you can count on familiar moments involving boomsticks, moose and chainsaws. This is my kind of comedy, and I definitely recommend Evil Dead: The Musical. Tickets are under $20 and are available online. There are plenty of dates left but it looks like tickets are selling quickly!

(Note: we were not compensated for this review, other than with a chance to preview this show for free. Thanks to the lovely @winemedineme for hooking us up!)

Reser Bicycle Outfitters

I've been a cycling enthusiast for most of my life. Whether it was my time at the BMX track as a kid or mountain biking and road racing as I got older, it's always been part of my life.

One thing that wasn't part of my life were bike shops. Even as an avid rider and fairly competent bike tech, I found them rather intimidating and in a lot of cases unfriendly. Most of my parts and tools I'd order online and avoid the local bike shop if at all possible. There are some things you really need a shop for though, and with a recently started cycling project of mine, I was in need of a local shop to do some work on a frame I purchased.

Selecting a shop isn't the shot in the dark it used to be. With sites like Yelp and other online services, you can get a good feel for a place before visiting. That is how I ended up at Reser Bicycle Outfitters. I've seen their name come up a number of times on other local blogs in regards to area events and on Queen City Bike. I had also gotten a few recommendations via Twitter from other cyclists in the area.

Out of all the bike shops in town, these guys are the most friendly and probably have one of the more comfortable shops I've been in. A lot of other shops are rather dark, hard to navigate, or they hide everything behind a counter which makes casual browsing a pain. At Reser, everything is easy to find, out in the open and the staff is friendly and wants to help you with whatever it is you need.

I was a little nervous going in, as I had some very specific frame work I needed done for a bike build I am doing. They were immediately on the same page and even suggested a couple things I hadn't thought of. The work was done quickly and very professionally. I've been back a few times since for various other things and have had good experiences each time.

I would definitely recommend Reser if you're in need of anything bike related, whether it's service or a new bicycle. They carry a full range of bikes that fit any need or price range you may be looking for.

Newport Helicopter Tours

Usually we blog about things we've done or are doing - this time it's about something we'd like to do. In the last couple weeks I've been watching these helicopter tours depart and arrive from their new landing pad near the Newport Levee.

From their website:
Stratus Helicopters is NOW OPEN at our new tour location in Newport, KY on Riverboat Row just west of BB Riverboats and directly across the river from the Great American Ballpark where the Cincinnati Red's play. Hours of operation will be Thursday thru Sunday 10am to 10pm (weather permitting) unless there is a schedule Red's home game and then no flights will be permitted for 1 hour before till 1 hour after the ball game due to FAA Regulations. Walk ups are welcome and are first-come-first-serve. Reservations may only be made for tours longer than 6 minutes. Tours starting at just $25 per person!
Sounds pretty good to me - has anyone taken these tours? I'm curious how long of a ride you get for $25 as their tours that depart from Lunken start at $70 for a six minute tour and go up from there quite quickly.

We're a bit tied up with visitors and vacations the next few weeks, but we plan on taking one of these tours sometime soon and will post when we do (hopefully with some really cool photos). If you've been please leave us a comment and let us know how it was!

Southgate House

After our tour of the Cincinnati Museum Center, Dan, Bradley and I headed across the river to Southgate House in Newport.

Now, this is another thing I hate to publicly admit: I'd never been to Southgate. Well that's not technically true-- I was upstairs once, for an art show-- but I'd never seen a concert there. All I'd heard were amazing things about how this was the venue for (greater) Cincinnati. When I read that my darling Blitzen Trapper was coming, I figured it was time to finally make my way over to Newport.

First off, let me say that Blitzen Trapper-- and their opening act, Wye Oak-- put on an incredible show. And I was able to hear "Furr" live... I've probably listened to that song more often than the band has.

And Southgate was great. We couldn't get any solid pictures because we wanted to leave the camera in the car, but here's a shot of the fat brick mansion-turned-concert hall from Flickr user damongreen.
