Chi-nnati's

Chicago style pizza is something people seem to either love or hate, and for the lovers you have to drive to Chicago to get the real thing.

Until now...

Chi-nnati's, aside from having one of the most confusing and annoying names to say and type, is a deep dish lover's dream.

I was turned onto this by a friend whose recommendation included a request that he be buried with one of their pizzas, and I have to agree with him. In fact, I would like to be buried IN one of their pizzas.

We opted to do carryout and grabbed a simple cheese pizza - then wandered over to the bookstore while we waited the 45 minutes it takes to bake one of these beauties. Definitely call ahead if you're doing carry out and be ready to break out Catan on your iPhone to pass some time if you're dining in.

What you get is a massively thick slab of a pizza with the cheese in the middle and the sauce on the top. The pizza is great, the crust is great, the food coma is great - and the fact that all this can now be had without a drive to Chicago is awesome. We have plans to go back and eat-in, perhaps a part two post will follow that.

I have a groupon that we're gonna use as soon as I can squeeze a trip in out there.
Apparently I'm a pretty busy guy.

much better chicago style pizza to be had at Mios and at Bourbon House Pizzeria in Florence...and so no, the "until now" is incorrect.

I think your piece is the first thing I have seen written about Chi-nnati's that wasn't negative. Everyone else I have heard from, written or verbal, has found the pizza there to be no better than 'meh'

That is not to say you're wrong - everyone's tastes are different - but you're in a distinct minority here

since when is Mio's chicago style? i've eaten there numerous times and Mio's is ok, but it in no way resembles Chicago style... ever been to chicago?

everyone i know loves the place. i've not heard a single negative thing until this comment of yours

also - i took a look at the Bourbon House and if the pictures on their site are supposed to be true deep dish chicago style, they're fooling themselves.

this is what deep dish chicago style is - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago-style_pizza

neither mio's nor bourbon house (from what i see on their site) are even in the ballpark.

Sorry Prolix, but I have indeed eaten chicago style pizza in Chicago, and both Mio's (stuffed) and Bourbon House (deep dish) serve a very representative pie. I have had this fact confirmed by Chicago natives who now live here in Cincinnati.

...and Prolix, you should do a search for reviews of Chi-nnati's. You may find the results educational.

i can't help it if people around here can't appreciate TRUE chicago deep dish.

mio's as chicago style... riiiight.

no problem....it doesnt bother me whether or not you choose to accept the stuffed pie at Mio's as Chicago. Chicago has 4 distinctive styles, and 1 of them is stuffed. Mios does the stuffed style. Giordanos - look it up :-)

And again......food/taste is very subjective. I don't doubt that you and your buddy enjoy the pies there. No problem. Just wanted to point out that most people who have written about it or spoken to me directly about it have not liked their experience there.

Wow, you definitely make it fun to comment on your blog! Why even allow comments if you are just going to shoot them down?

Dude! It's just pizza!

its called a healthy debate. 'anonymous' is entitled to their opinion as much as i am to mine. i see nothing wrong with us challenging each other. worst case you guys get a list of pizza joints to check out!

I think the comments from the "In defense of the Suburbs" post = healthy debate. This post = you being snippy. Just my opinion!

fair enough - erica is back from sxsw so my reign of comment terror is over.

I actually used to prefer Mio's stuffed to Giordano's in Chicago. THen a few years back they switched the sausage to something most foul. Have not been back.

But the Stuffed at Mio's is definitely a Chicago-style pizza.

I don't have an opinion yet, when we tried to go before Christmas it was closed for a private party. But in defense of anon, this has to be the first time I ever defended an anonymous commentor, when I bought the groupon I was bombarded by people complaining about Chi-nati's and not one person stepped up to defend it.
And anon, why anonymous? create a profile already, its easy.

I think this is one of those places people either love or hate, or people just don't like the pizza style. I know my dad doesn't care for chicago deep dish at all. I had nothing but recommendations to go to this place, but obviously comments here and even on urban spoon suggest its a very hit or miss place.

I personally dig it, reminds me of Gino's East, food wise at least. Gino's is still 20x better, but its also 5 hours away.

PEOPLE! What the WHAT! I leave for a couple of days and when I come back we're fighting tooth and nail over pizza?

I made my very own Chicago Style pizza recently and, in my humble opinion, it was better than Uno's and Due's... their crust is a little bland.
